I’ve recently published a blog post highlighting my true feelings regarding Melbourne. I suppose in short, it didn’t have the get up and go feeling like I’ve had with other places in Australia and in blunt, I thought it was very overrated. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t had a fun time and there are still a handful of places I can write about as recommendations.
Flinders Street Station
Probably one of the most photographed buildings in Melbourne, Flinders Street Station was one of the first places I wanted to see and picture. The station is a lot bigger than I expected and even though I say I wasn’t ‘wowed’ by Melbourne, this building is stunning. Opposite you’ll find St Paul’s Cathedral – another pretty building for your gallery.
Centre Place – Laneways
We stumbled across Melbourne’s Laneways unexpectedly, and we are so glad we did. This busy lanes are packed full of restaurants, cafes and shops, with a great atmosphere throughout. You are sure to have a new eating experience – I haven’t experienced anything like it. But the Laneways are a must see if you are wandering around Melbourne.
We took a street walk recommended by Lonely Planets Best of Australia, and although we weren’t really blown away, the walk become worth it when we ended up at Hosier Lane. Graffiti appears to be a big thing in Melbourne, and this street is packed full of different art designs, quotes and colourful graffiti, something I’ve never appreciated until now. Hosier Lane is pretty cool, and definitely worth seeing.
Queen Victoria Market
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much. I’m not a foodie person and I like to stick to what I know, oh, and I also hate crowds. But I absolutely loved it here. It had a real feeling to it and the atmosphere was brilliant. The small stalls feature street food from all over the world with plenty to choose from. I’d highly recommend getting there as early as possible to avoid the crowds! *every Wednesday evening
As someone who loves relaxing and flicking through a magazine of any sort, Mag Nation is fabulous. Catering for just about anyone, we loved mooching around the cute little shop and finding all sorts of different magazines and stationary. I guess it was just cool to see something a bit different, it’s just a shame I’m on a budget… I’d have easily bought a stack load of magazines to bring back to the Air BnB with me….
Update – I went back and treated myself lol…
Shrine of Remembrance
Visiting Canberra’s war memorial made travelling there worth it, so I couldn’t wait to see what Melbourne had to offer. We didn’t go inside, but we were amazed at how beautiful Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance was. Take a walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens and you’ll find your way to this beautiful spot!
